Resources/Self Image/L’image corporelle
August 15th, 2009 by lianeshaw

There are many resources out there that aim to help both young people and their parents better understand the challenges of developing and keeping a positive sense of self.   As with the other resource page, my goal here is to add resources as I find them and to provide a brief description of each one.   I have found in this area particularly many resources are aimed as much at parents as they are at teens.   It is definitely worth it for the teen audience to read the advice being given to parents.  A better understanding of the types of influences that might be affecting your self image can help you to protect yourself.  If you have a comfortable and open enough relationship with your parents, you could share some of these resources so that you can work together…building a positive self image seems to be a collaborative effort!

1/This is a great site, called Center for Young Women’s Health originating from the Children’s Hospital in Boston.  Its tag line reads Health Information for Teen Girls Around the World,  It addresses all kinds of health and body related issues and is very directed towards young people in its tone and interest level.  It also contains a blog where opinions are shared and questions answered,

2/This site is called KidsHealth and it addresses all kinds of issues surrounding body image and adolescence. This particular article is actually directed at parents, but the information in it is valuable for young people to read as well.

3/This page links to other interesting resources, specifically dealing with body image and women.  While mostly directly at adult women, in reading through it, it really applies to teens as well.

4/This is another page from the same site.  This one is again directed at parents, particularly mom’s and how their attitude towards themselves can influence their children’s attitiude and self image.  Again, it’s important for teens to understand the things that influence them and this article does an interesting job of pointing some of those out.

5/The Peel Public Health site is a terrific resource.  It has information for both teens and professionals.  It also has some interesting quizzes for teens to take and measure their own self and body image.

6/ This site is filled with interesting articles, advice, quizzes and opportunities to share opinions on teen issues.  A lot of the articles are actually written by teens which makes it particularly interesting.

 7.  This is a site billed as being for teens and younger girls.  It has some good information and differs from some of the others in that it has some really simple activities that you can try by yourself or with some friends.
