Pro-Self

Every time you turn on the TV, or the computer or look at the cover of a magazine it seems like there are ten ads telling you how to lose weight. It’s hard to hold onto your self image and remember that you’re more than just a body in a world that seems obsessed with how you look instead of who you are.

When I was a teenager, I had a friend I always talked with about wanting to be thin and beautiful. We couldn’t seem to separate the two words. Thin and beautiful went together in our minds just like fat and ugly did. It’s pretty much all we talked about and thought about. I got so obsessed with the whole trying to be thin bit that I lost control of it and ended up with an eating disorder.  Not too many people knew what eating disorders were then and all of the complicated reasons that some people develop them and others don’t. No one in my personal life really understood what was up with me. I was lucky enough to get some help and recovered…..very slowly.  I didn’t have access to the wealth of information and resources that are available to young people today.  There are masses of options but as a starting point this site is very helpful and easy to read and navigate.

There are so many more influences on young people today that it seems to be getting harder and harder to find who you are in the middle of everyone telling you how you should look.

There are many less helpful internet sites out there that are pro thin and pro ana and pro dieting.

This blog is about being pro self.    But how do we get there..?
